Paul Chen Practical Side Sword
by Hanwei
Item # RCCASSH2279TS
The Paul Chen Practical Side Sword
The Side Sword was a military sword of the 16th and 17th century Renaissance period that also achieved popularity among civilians, due to its relatively light weight and quickness. The Side Sword also had an advantage over its contemporary, the rapier sword, in having the ability to cut efficiently as well as thrust. Side swords were often the weapon of choice for sword and buckler fighting. The Paul Chen Practical Side Sword, based on a German original, is a beautifully proportioned piece that balances very well. The "swept" hilt affords excellent hand protection and the blade geometry makes for outstanding performance in both the cut and the thrust.
The Paul Chen Practical Side Sword carries a sparring blade designed for safety. Side sword sparring, in both sword and buckler and sword and dagger modes is becoming increasingly popular with many proponents among the ranks of the various Renaissance societies.

The blade is unsharpened, with 1/16” safety edges and rounded tips, complying with the combat rules of
many re-enactment societies. The blade is crafted in 1065 high-carbon steel, hardened to 50HRC, which reduces edge-notching to acceptable levels while providing resilience and protection against brittleness. The scabbard is finished in matte black, ready for owner customization if desired.
Although Basket Hilt swords appeared throughout Britain from the mid-sixteenth century on, their association with the seventeenth and eighteenth century Scottish highlander has become legendary. Paul Chen Practical Single Hand Sword
by Hanwei
Item # RCCASSH2046TS
The Paul Chen Practical Single Hand Sword
The Practical Single-Hand Sword is based on the
Sir William Marshall sword ,
so named for one of England’s finest knights of the latter half of the 12th century.
The sword is classically styled , with a cruciform hilt , wheel pommel and a ridged and fullered blade that is both stiff and surprisingly light. With a weight of less than 2 ½ lbs. , the sword can be wielded forcefully without undue wear and tear on the arm.
The Practical SingleHand Sword is styled on authentic historical swords but it is tailored to meet the needs of the re-enactor for stage combat at a very affordable price. This very popular and affordable weapon features authentic hilt styling , with a fully tempered un-edged and un-pointed blade.
The Practical Single Hand Sword is designed to withstand rugged use while providing the level of safety required
by many of today’s re-enactment societies. The blade is crafted from 1065 high-carbon steel ,
hardened to HRC 50 , which restricts edge notching to acceptable levels while providing resilience and
protection against brittleness. While the blade is substantial , it is fullered to provide balance and good handling characteristics.
The Practical SingleHand Sword blade features 1/16" wide edges and a rounded tip for safety.
The tang is also substantial , with radiused corners at the blade shoulder and no welds. The end of the tang is riveted over the pommel , which both eliminates any possibility of inadvertent disassembly and provides a traditional means of tightening a loose hilt. The hardwood grip is leather covered. The scabbard is fabricated in glass-filled resin, to provide great impact resistance , to eliminate swelling and to minimize blade corrosion problems. The scabbard now features belt rings that adjust to allow vertical or horizontal carry. The wood-grain finish is attractive, but most re-enactors will decorate the scabbard to match their persona.
This fully functional broad sword is tailored to meet the demands of re-enactment and stage combat.

Cas Hanwei Michael 'Tinker' Pearce Swords
CAS Hanwei has commissioned Michael 'Tinker' Pearce to design a line of swords that will satisfy both the sparring and cutting needs of Western Martial Arts practitioners. Matching sharp and blunt versions of each sword in the series offer the same outstanding handling characteristics in both disciplines. The Michael 'Tinker' Pearce swords meet Tinker's exacting quality requirements and are built in much the same way as his custom pieces. Each Cas Hanwei Michael 'Tinker' Pearce Sword blade is forged from 5160 Spring Steel, Marquenched to the desired hardness of 50-53 Hrc while the tang is drawn back to the low 30s Hrc. For the Medieval models the very end of the tang is threaded to fit a 5mm allen nut recessed into the pommel which allows for dismantling of the hilt assembly for inspection, to exchange blades if needed, and for anyone wanting to easily customize their grip. Also the Sharp and Blunt blades are interchangeable on all Medieval models. The Viking Sword sharps and blunts are peened for historical authenticity and to meet the needs of collector and reenactment groups. The grips are cord wrapped and leather covered wood and tapered for a comfortable grip. Each Cas Hanwei Michael 'Tinker' Pearce Sword is supplied with a leather covered wood scabbard with metal throat and chape.
